Thinking of Lash Extensions? Read This First

Time is precious for me so I value any kind of efficiencies especially those that will make me look good with zero effort. Anything to get that #IWokeUpLikeThis look, I’m game for, which is why I am obsessed with eyelash extensions.  Thinking about eye lash extensions, but you have a few questions before you take the proverbial plunge? I got you. Lash extension places are popping up as quickly as froyo stores circa 2009 and it’s important for you to know what the hell is going on.  I sat down with True Lash Beauty aka True Lash Designs owned by Thania Trieu – my lash extraordinaire and close personal friend to debunk myths and give you the 411 on what you should be looking for/asking for before you go.

Before you read this.. A bad lash job is like a bad hair color job – you can spot it from a mile away and it can look clumpy, spider-like or like mini eye fans. Gross. So let’s go!

Who are lash extensions for?

Who are lash extensions for?

Anyone who is looking to enhance their lash look, decrease their getting ready time, but still look put together {ahem ahem Moms}, ladies looking for a little extra va-va-voom  for a wedding or event or just looking for a little oomph in their lashes {I’m thinking about you blondies that have to load up on that mascara}.

Lash Extensions Are NOT For Everyone

I have sent several friends to Thania, who she has politely turned away because of eye issues or other circumstances. You want someone who cares about the health of your lashes and isn’t only looking to make a quick buck.

Not all lashes are created equal

There are different types {synthetic vs mink vs silk} as well as different lengths and levels of curl. You should tell your lash pro the look you are going for and make sure it can be achieved with your base {aka your natural lashes}. Also, you should know over-the-top glam isn’t the only look achievable. Some people don’t want it to be obvious, so just make that known that you want a more natural look.

It doesn’t have to damage your natural lashes

This is SO important to mention and goes back to why doing your homework is key. You want someone who is discerning and sets reasonable expectations. Just like getting your hair done, it’s addictive but it doesn’t have to be damning – know what I mean?

What are the dos and don’ts?

  • You can sweat in them, but the first 24 hours after you have them done, they definitely should not get wet.
  • When you wash your face, wash around the lashes and try to get as little water on them as possible to avoid clumpage
  • You can wear eye make-up but try to hold off on the eyeliner. I was an eyeliner feen prior to extensions {which btw was a huge pain}, but you won’t need it anymore – promise
  • Don’t wear mascara – you don’t need it! You can put it on the bottom row – that’s fine, but lawd don’t put them on top of your extensions

Let’s Talk Cost and How Long They Last

Depending on where you live, a full set can run around $200 – $400 with fills every 4-6 weeks from $85-$175 a pop. Whenever possible, find someone who isn’t looking to nickel and dime you and charge you by the week and more about what you need versus time past – make sense? Also, the better care you take of them, the longer they will last, which leads me to….

Tips for Care

  • I would invest in this eye mask if you are a harsh sleeper/eye rubberer – it’s $7 and also makes you sleep better
  • You know those eyelash combs from Sephora that they have for you to try on mascara? You need to grab some of those and comb your lashes every couples of days so they don’t look cray
  • If you wear makeup on your lids, gently remove it with makeup remove trying to avoid the lash line

So that’s it, I’m a bonafide addict – never looking back. Totally makes me look awake AF with zero effort. PS if you are In the DC/Northern Virginia area, you should run do not walk to see Thania at True Lash Designs by texting her at 703. 943.8103 – she’s the best.

Till next time
