I think resolutions are bullshit. You wake up {probably hungover} and it’s a New Year, now what? This year I’m telling you to screw the resolutions and say yes to goal setting you can actually achieve. What’s the difference? Goals are timely, measurable and achievable thus providing us the opportunity to evolve. I started doing this years ago, when I – a person who loathed running and got winded from a brisk walk – decided I was going to run a half marathon by May. Spoiler alert – I did it. In 2018, my goal was to launch this blog by August 15th – check and check. Read on about how you can easily set yourself up for an achievable year.

Where to start?

First off, I don’t think your goals need to start on January 1. I give myself till January 15th to get my sh*t together and write them down on my notepad on my phone. I’m sure there are a ton of apps you could use, but it’s easy and I ain’t got time so that’s my method. I go down the list of areas in my life that I want to set goals for.

Here’s a list of some of mine {past and present} that include the:
  • Personal Enrichment {journal for 3 minutes a day, meditate for 2 minutes a day}
  • Family {travel at least 3 times with Eddie only and at least twice with the twins}
  • Health {take a new cross-training class each month }
  • Work {target accounts}
  • Financial {save xxx amount, invest xxxx}
  • Treat Yo’ Self Purchases {buy that purse I’ve been eyeing}
  • Home {update bathrooms, convert basement into playroom}

Make It Time Sensitive

That list above looks kinda daunting, so you need to break it down. Slim it down to one or two in each category and now here is the kicker. You need to set deadlines. You don’t need to start your goals on January 1, but you need to set a start-date and it needs a tangible ‘end’ date. I say ‘end’, because it may be all year, but you need to make it measurable which leads me to my next tip.

Check-In with Those Goals

It’s the sales gal in me. I need accountability and at the end of each quarter, I set alerts to check-in to see my progress on hitting those goals.

Prioritize Then Reprioritize

When you do your check-ins, you’ll notice that you’ll have prioritized certain goals and lost track of others. This is your chance to reignite those secondary goals and achieve them.

Share Them

I share mine with my husband Eddie {again I need accountability!} and also share my check-in ‘status’ with him. The best part, most rewarding pat-yourself-on-the-back moment is sharing that I’ve achieved x,y,z goal with him at the end of the year. It helps drive my momentum forward and has me jumping in full-speed on a positive note from the previous years successes.

So that’s it! Keep yourself in check, so you can set yourself up for success on your evolution journey.

What goals are you setting for yourself this year? Share with me!
