In my former life, I had a reputation of helping my colleagues renegotiate their salaries, because I LOVE a good negotiation. I recognize it’s not something that others nerd out on – especially when it comes to money, so I’m dishing 5 tips to help you negotiate the salary you want.
Do Your Research
Sounds obvious right? But for some damn reason, it’s skipped upon more often than you’d think. Ever heard of Google lol? Search to see what others with similar experience, knowledge and skill sets are getting paid. Glassdoor is also a great resource.
Would You Give You What You Are Asking For?
It’s time to look inward and you have to be hyper self-aware here. If you are asking for a 20-30% increase in salary, you aren’t going to get that in one chunk. Over time? Yes. But asking for crazy lifts will often times offend and stifle you. Get a pulse check. Do your research and make sure the answer to the question of ‘would I give this money to me?’ is HELL YES.
Be Qualitative + Quantitative
Tell them what you’ve done for them and how you are going to continue to do xyz. Make the conversation about them, what you’ve driven for them – appeal to their interests. This is key. If you go in saying ‘I’ve worked really hard and really long hours’. Newsflash, no one gives a fuck. That’s the expectation. This is the time to present the most compelling case for yourself. Use data + facts to craft the story as to why you deserve this.
Practice Your Negotiation
I always would do this with Eddie and my Dad. Practice with someone you trust, who can push objections on you and give you honest feedback. It helps to ensure you hit every point, so that when it comes time to have the real conversation, it’s not your first rodeo.
Close With This
“Is there anything more I can do to ensure that I get what I’m asking for?” This will help you create a dialogue here and gain a sense as to where you stand.
So playing devils advocate for a moment. What happens if they say “it’s not in the budget?” Here’s what you can do:
- Grin + Bear It – Not optimal, but also you still have a job
- Devise A Plan – Work with your boss to achieve a plan that you are working towards this common goal together and make sure you are getting a firm answer with a date.
- Put Your Resume Out There – I mean, if you are undervalued and could do better, push yourself harder and start pulling your feelers out there.
This goes without saying, but be confident. It makes a difference. Do you feel more confident going into your meeting? You should! Hope these are helpful !
Till next time,
P
